Support for Students

At Mark Rutherford School, we are committed to ensuring that every student receives the support they need to thrive in literacy, regardless of their starting point. For students who find reading and writing challenging, we offer a range of targeted interventions designed to build confidence and close gaps. These include phonics catch-up programmes for those who need foundational support, which provide personalised pathways to improve fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. These interventions are delivered by trained staff and carefully monitored to ensure progress is sustained over time. Click below to find out more about some of our key literacy components:

New Group Reading Test - New Group Reading Test - GL Assessment
Accelerated Reader - Accelerated Reader | Renaissance Learning
Lexia - What is PowerUp? | Community
EEF Switch On Switch-on Reading - trial | EEF

We also provide tailored support for students with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). This includes adapted resources, scaffolded tasks, and one-to-one or small group support where appropriate. Our staff work closely with the SEND and EAL teams to ensure that literacy development is accessible and inclusive for all learners.

Progress is tracked through regular assessments, reading age data (New Group Reading Test and STAR Reader), and teacher feedback, allowing us to respond quickly to emerging needs. Parents and carers are kept informed through progress reports, meetings, and access to resources that can be used at home. At Mark Rutherford School, we believe that literacy is a shared journey—and with the right support, every student can achieve success.
