Space for Learning

Our library, Space for Learning, is at the heart of Mark Rutherford School’s literacy strategy and plays a vital role in fostering a culture of reading, curiosity, and independent learning. More than just a place to borrow books, it is a dynamic space where students can explore new ideas, discover diverse voices, and develop a lifelong love of reading. Students may also use the Space for Learning to complete homework from all subjects if required. Carefully curated collections support both academic study and reading for pleasure, with texts ranging from classic literature, contemporary fiction, manga and biographies to subject-specific resources that complement classroom learning. The library hosts regular events such as; author visits, themed reading weeks, poetry slams, and book clubs, all designed to engage students and celebrate the joy of reading.

Space for Learning also provides a quiet, inclusive environment for focused study, research, and reflection. It supports literacy interventions by offering access to programmes like Lexia and Accelerated Reader, and is staffed by our knowledgeable librarian who guide students in selecting appropriate texts and developing reading habits. Student voice is central to the library’s ethos—Reader Leaders help shape displays, recommend books, and lead peer reading initiatives. Whether students are preparing for exams, escaping into a story, or exploring new genres, Space for Learning is a cornerstone of their literacy journey at Mark Rutherford School.
