Mark Rutherford School
MRUS is a 11-19 (from September 2010) school in the northern part of Bedford, with about 1500 students on roll. It serves a wide ranging, urban catchment area and also receives students from other parts of the town. Opened in 1973, the school offers a strong and wide-ranging curriculum to suit the needs of all its students, regardless of their ability or background.
Built on a large and pleasant campus, with extensive green spaces for sport and recreation, the buildings house well equipped classrooms and other facilities. Development of new technologies is a priority, to make best use of the latest learning resources.
In a school of many strengths, the Arts are a beacon of excellence and an area of considerable pride for the students and staff. Throughout the school’s existence outstanding public performances have been a hallmark and new heights continue to be reached today. The school holds the prestigious Arts Goldmark, alongside its status as a Specialist Arts College, in recognition of its achievements in this area. Alongside this, there is a strong competitive emphasis in sport for those who wish to participate in extra-curricular activities, and plenty of other areas of interest for students to make the most of their school life.
Above all the staff at the school are dedicated and committed to raising standards and developing each child to reach their potential. Support for students of all backgrounds is very strong. Exam results are good, and improving, and there is a strong emphasis on academic achievement, backed up by a real knowledge of each child’s individual needs.
MRS is an establishment which serves the local community beyond the role of the ordinary school. Adult evening classes are offered in numerous areas, there is a pre-school facility and the campus also houses a unit for autistic young people, who are very well integrated into everyday school life.
Under the guidance of the Headteacher, Mr Steve Peacey, and Chair of Governors, Mr Philip Russell, Mark Rutherford is a vibrant community, where students learn in a positive, healthy (MRS has been awarded the Healthy Schools accreditation) and challenging environment and the local community has, at its centre, a welcoming and well-equipped facility .
