The Government & Politics Department at
Mark Rutherford

GP is an AS and A2 option for students in the Sixth Form.  Many former students have gone on to study the subject at a higher level at a range of universities including Cambridge, the LSE, De Montfort and Essex.  Others have forged successful careers for example in research and the police.

Why study Government and Politics?

GP is useful for all those who want to know how the country is run and how to influence decisions.  It is also useful for those who want to enter careers in industry, business, law and public service.  The final reason to study GP is that for many students it is a new area of learning and goes well with other subjects.

What can I study with GP?

Virtually any subject goes with GP but usually students are studying other humanities subjects such as History.

What do I study?

MRS students study Edexcel Government and Politics.  Details can be found at www.edexcel.org.uk.

During the first year (AS), students study British politics.  Topics covered include Pressure Groups, Parliament, Elections, Political Parties, Civil Liberties and the Constitution.

US government and politics is studied in the second (A2) year.  Areas studied include Elections, Political Parties, Pressure Groups, Racial Politics, Congress, Supreme Court, the Presidency and the Constitution.

How do I study?

Lessons involve a range of activities which include discussion, note taking, debating and decision making.  Students also complete assignments based upon the demands of the examination.   Keeping up to date with events and doing additional reading is important.
