General Studies at
Mark Rutherford
General Studies at AS and A2 level is a subject in its own right which integrates knowledge from different subject areas. Students will study important topics from science and technology, the arts and the social sciences and the interconnections between these spheres of knowledge, raising awareness of current issues in society.
Teaching in General Studies aims to encourage the development of thinking and analytical skills as well as the transmission of factual knowledge. In General Studies’ lessons, students are encouraged to debate and exchange ideas in small group discussions, developing their communication skills across a wide range of subjects. The General Studies Visiting Speaker Programme provides a fortnightly forum for discussion and information across a broad range of topical and relevant issues, and all sixth form students are expected to attend.
Success in General Studies is often an important factor in securing a place in a Higher Education Institution. All students are offered the opportunity to continue the subject to A2 level.
