PE Department at
Mark Rutherford

The Physical Education Department consist of seven full time members of staff, and other staff who contribute to certain courses and or through the extra curricular programme.

Physical Education Department Courses

Key stage 3

  • Students follow a National Curriculum Core PE programme (4 lessons a fortnight)

Key Stage 4

  • Students follow a Core PE programme based on choices they have made (3 lessons a fortnight)
  • Students may opt to follow a (OCR) GCSE Physical Education programme (5 lessons a fortnight)
  • Students may opt to follow a BTEC first Diploma in ‘Sport’ Exercise and Fitness (10 Lessons a fortnight)
  • Students may opt to follow a (AQA)GCSE Dance course (5 lessons a fortnight)
  • It is intended to offer, as a pilot, the JSLA award to one group of year 10’s

Key Stage 5

  • Students may opt to follow a BTEC first Diploma in ‘Sport’ Exercise and Fitness (10 Lessons a fortnight)
  • Students may opt to follow a BTEC National Diploma in ‘Sport and Exercise Sciences’ (27 Lessons a fortnight)
  • Students may opt to follow an (AQA) ‘A’ Level Dance Course (8 lessons a fortnight)

Facilities

  • 1 Sports hall (4 Badminton courts)
  • 1 small gymnasium/dance studio
  • 1 large hardcourt area (8 tennis courts, 1 outdoor basketball court or 6 netball courts)
  • 1 large redgra area (3 small hockey/football pitches)
  • 1 large field (winter: 2 football pitches, 2 rugby pitches, 1 hockey pitch, grids and much space beyond)
  • 2 Changing rooms, with shower facilities, girls & boys office and HOD office
  • 2 dedicated computer rooms and 2 GCSE Theory Physical education rooms (1 shared with languages)

Extra Curricular Activities

Autumn & Spring: Football, basketball, sports acrobatics, netball, rugby, hockey, badminton, table tennis, dance (various styles & types) cross country, rowing, tai-kwon-do
Summer: Rounders, cricket, athletics, tennis, basketball, table tennis, dance, rowing

Recent Accomplishments:

A large number of students represent the district, and county in a wide range of sports. Some students have also represented the country.

Academic Year 2008 - 2009

  • Year 9 and 11 Bedford and District Winners (2006) 6th Form Bedford and District Winners (2008)
  • Two students came second in the local round of the cross country championships and represented the school at the National Event (2008)
  • Year 9, 11 and 6th form basketball teams Bedford and district finalists and year 10 were winners (2008) · Year 9 Boys Bedfordshire County and Bedford and District Champions (2009) They also went one better than the 2007 team and were in the final 32 in the country
  • The year 9 Basketball team were Bedford and District Champions and Bedfordshire County Runners-up (2009)
  • The year 11 Basketball team remained Bedford and District Champions and made it through to the final 38 in the schools National Basketball Competition (2009)

Academic Year 2007 - 2008

  • 6th Form Bedford and District Finalists
  • Year 10 Bedford and District Champions
  • Year 11 Girls Bedford and District Futsal Finalists
  • Marked Movement Dance Company’ again won the best choreography at the global rock challenge competition

Academic Year 2006 - 2007

  • 6th Form Basketball Team semi-finalist
  • Year 9 Basketball Team Semi-finalist
  • Year 10 football team were through to the last 64 in the National Cup
  • A pair won a gold medal in the regional round of the acrobatic gymnastics competition and represented the school in the National Finals (many silver and bronze were also won in the regional finals)
  • ‘Marked Movement Dance Company’ won the best choreography at the global rock challenge competition in Portsmouth and have been invited to a prestigious event in London. (also the dance club put on dance displays for our school, feeder schools & in local events)
  • Two students came second in the local round of the cross country championships and represented the school at the National Event.

Academic Year 2005 – 2006

  • 6th Form Rugby team played at the Bedford Rugby Club Ground in front of a few thousand people in the district cup final.
  • Year 9 winners of the District Cup, runners up in the county cup
  • Year 11 football team were winners of the District Cup and won the district seven-a-side competition.
  • Year 9 & 10 Girls football team won the district indoor football league and tournament
  • 6th Form Basketball Team were Finalists in the league competition.

Our department

  • We have some of the best exam and value added results within the school and a 100% pass rate.
  • We have pleasant students with a keen interest in sport, dance and physical activity.
  • We have a wide range of courses.
  • The staff are pleasant, friendly, experienced, supportive and receptive to new ideas.
  • We have talented young people in the need of keen, enthusiastic teachers to develop their abilities further.
  • We have a dedicated administrative assistant who supports all aspects of the departments’ work.
  • We are part of the Bedford and Kempston School Sports Partnership which though co-operative working has brought much benefit to the school and the students.
